Description
Vintage collectible cup plate fromthe Pairpoint Glass Company of Sagamore, Massachusetts. This is "Peter Rabbit" from the Thornton Burgess collection of Peter Rabbit and his friends. It is a 2-tone opalescent glass, measures approx. 3-1/2" round by 1/2" deep and is in excellent condition. I have recently required a large cup plate collection from an estate sale in New Hampshire. Most of these cup plates had the small round Pairpoint sticker, but most have fallen off in the box. I will be listing more in the weeks to come, please email me if you are looking for something in particular.
These colorful cup plates are sought after by collectors, make lovely sun catchers in a window, can be used for fancy culinary small plates, and Peter Rabbit and Friends make great baby shower gifts!
The paper insert to the Thornton Burgess series of cup plates reads:
"Thornton W. Burgess Commemorative Cup Plate Series from The Thornton W. Burgess Society of Sandwich, Massachusetts.
Peter Rabbit and his Friends Immortalized in Glass
Thornton W. Burgess, renowned children's author and naturalist, was born in Sandwich, Massachusetts in 1874. As a boy Mr. Burgess found Peter Rabbit and his Friends in the Sandwich Briar Patch. The Sandwich Glass Factory was also part of his boyhood. It is appropriate that Burgess' Peter Rabbit and his Friends take their place among the delightful cup plates now hand-produced by Pairpoint Glass Co. of Cape Cod. Dies for this series are engraved by A. A. White of Sandwich.
Cup plates of this type were used between 1826 and 1850, when fashion decreed tea cups without handles. Hot tea was poured into the saucers to cool, while the cup was placed on a small plate to prevent damage to best linens or polished tables.
Proceeds from these cup plates support the Thornton W. Burgess Museum in Sandwich, Massachusetts. The Museum welcomes visitors from June 15th - September 30th."
