Description
I am a beekeeper in western North Carolina and have been for 6 years. For the last five, I have been chemical free. I do not even use “naturally” occurring acids in concentrate such as Oxalic Acid or Formic Acid. These are approved by the FDA and considered an organic practice. I do not feed artificial pollen, nor provide natural supplements, oils, or extracts. No heat is ever applied to my honey (a practice which makes harvesting faster but can damage healthy enzymes). My honey is absolutely raw, simply strained (not filtered).
FAQ: How do you know it’s sourwood?
Answer: Great Question! In NC honey can be labeled sourwood (or anything specific) if it is at least 51 percent that nectar. McDowell County NC is known for its sourwood purity. Pollen analysis over the years has shown McDowell county yielding sourwood honey between 60-90s percent. Responsible beekeepers switch their honey “supers” when sourwood blooms to ensure purity. In our area when sourwood blooms it is the main nectar source and bees much prefer it! Little else proportionally produces nectar during our sourwood flow but there is clover, and assorted late blooming wildflowers. Color is now known not to be an accurate and reliable indicator of sourwood purity. Some sourwood comes in near colorless, and some an amber. Higher elevations often have more clear sourwood but other factors such as temp, rainfall, and and etc. influence nectar coloration.
The best way of assuring quality is trusting your beekeeper. This is hard to do online but I hope to earn your trust and my previous feedback should be a starting point. I am active in my county bee association, and a member of TF beekeepers of NC FB group. I have references upon request. Supply is limited. This year was tough for sourwood and I only collected from 5 hives. I will be harvesting and bottling a bit more in the near future.
