Description
Vintage Bacon Peerless Plectrum Banjo. Made in 1925 Groton, ConnecticutThis banjo is in very good+ condition especially for being around 100 years old. Neck is straight with no twist. Very little fret wear and the French polished finish is in beautiful condition. There are a few minor dings on the neck.
Pot is 11" nice and thick. Everything (except strings, head, and Grover bridge) are original as far as I can see. Has a removable sleeve band with an integrated tone ring under the head. Has 22 frets with little wear. Has Grover Presto brand tailpiece.
Scale length is 26 1/2". Comes with non original vintage chipboard case.
The "Peerless" model was a nicer-grade step between the plain-Jane Style C model and the fancier Style B. They are super rare in the plectrum version. It seems the demand was on the tenor banjo side because those are much more common
It's basically a Style C with an added Vega Little Wonder-style hoop-in-sleeve tone ring. Unsurprisingly, it sounds a lot like a Little Wonder, too -- clean and to the point but with a bit of extra snap and a sweet, lingering sustain.
This banjo is a delight to play. We currently have it in standard plectrum tuning CGBD,
but it works equally well in guitar tuning or an open C chord.
